We are lucky to be joined by Molly our Therapy Dog each fortnight. (Restrictions in place due to COVID-19)
The value of pet ‘therapy’ is widely accepted as a powerful aid to stimulation and communication. Studies have shown that the presence of companion animals can improve the well-being of children and lower the rate of anxiety, simply by making the environment happier, more enjoyable and less forbidding.
To minimise the risk to children in school, animals (other than assistant animals for example dogs for the blind/deaf) are not allowed usually on school premises (playground or building). Registered Therapy Dogs may attend school provided there are adequate safe guards in place.
It is accepted that interacting with animals is not appropriate for all children but that for some it has the potential to provide many positive benefits. If any parent or pupil object to Molly’s presence then arrangements must be made to ensure that this animal is kept away from them (if necessary, Molly may need exclusion from specific areas). Any parent/carer who does not wish their child to interact with the Molly is invited to inform school of their wishes.
